Abenragel On the Querent’s Thoughts

The fragment from Abenragel (Abû l-Hasan ‘Alî ibn Abî l-Rijâl), the court astrologer to the Tunisian prince al-Mu’izz ibn Bâdis, on how to find querent’s thoughts with horary astrology:

al-Kindi says:
If you want to know thoughts of a querent, count degrees from the lord of the hour to the Sun, and project the result from the beginning of Aries, and the thoughts are in the place where the counting is complete. Judge according to the nature of the sign and its lord.

Others say that significators of thoughts are nine [things] in the Ascendant and three [things] beyond the Ascendant. The [things] in Ascendant are the lord of domicile, the lord of exaltation, the lord of triplicity, the lord of its terms, the lord of face, the lord of novenaria, its almuten, and a planet to which the ascending degree is going, and a planet that is found in the Ascendant. The planets beyond the Ascendant are the Part of Fortune and its lord, the lord of the hour, the lord of the house of the Sun at day and the lord of the house of the Moon at night. Therefore look which one of them has the greatest dignities, is the strongest, is the greatest lord in the figure, because this one is the significator of thoughts.

Valens says:
Multiply the degrees of the Ascendant on the number of complete hours of the day or of the night, and project the result from the luminary of time, i.e. from the Sun at day or from the Moon at night. And where the number is complete, there the thoughts are. You will judge according to the nature of its sign and lord. And you should know, the first apllications show the thoughts, and the second show the question.

Hermes says:
First, find an ascending degree at the hour of question, and then find a significator from the lords of dignities of the sign of the Ascendant, and of the luminaries, and of the Part of Fortune, and all their stenghts.
The most strong and honest will be the significator, when it will have rule in the nature of the thing. And don’t be mistaken with a planet that has many witnesses, but look at the planet that has rule in its greater movement, or that has rulership in the Ascendant of the revolution of luminaries, or that has rulership in the revolution of great conjunction, or that has rulership in the revolution of the world, and all others as it is said in the book of conjunctions. Because that one which has any of these rulerships wil be preferred over the one having many witnesses.
