The birth and death of Richelieu

Italian astrologer of XVII century Andrea Argoli (also known by the Latin version of his surname as Argolus) gives in his book a natal chart of the famous French cardinal Richelieu (see Andreae Argoli… De diebus criticis et aegrorum decubitu, Patavij 1652, page 172, 173). The charts in this book are rectified. The rectification mostly made with primary directions. From the other hand, there is a nativity of Richelieu in the book of the famous French astrologer Jean-Baptiste Morin (see his Astrologia Gallica, Hagae 1661, page 612). The version of Morin is not the same as the version of Argoli.

Argoli argues his version with the following:

The nativity of cardinal Richelieu according to Andrea Argoli

He says:

The regal stars in principal angles should decree great dignities and most superior power; Regulus truly is in Medium Coeli; and bright South Scale is in East. Besides, the luminaries, the Part of Fortune and the lord of Mid-Heaven are placed in angles. Moreover (and it is the most important) there is the accordance of the Richelieu’s geniture with the geniture of Louis XIII, the king of France – the place of the Richelieu’s Sun is the ascending place of the king.
The illustrious riches are demonstrated by the Part of Fortune in the angle with a happy beam of both luminaries, and by the second house with a regal star ruled by Jupiter.
The rest – Saturn in the sixth anf the Moon in opposition of the Sun – promises not so great health.

In the year 1622, September 15th [Richelieu] is made the cardinal by Gregorius XV, as a result of the direction of Medium Coeli to the sextile of Venus, lady of Part of Fortune.
Died December 4th, 1642, as a result of the direction of the Sun to South Scale…

Then Argoli gives the chart of the decumbiture:

The decumbiture of cardinal Richelieu

29th of November, about sixth hour of the night, he was shaked with the great disturbance…
He died December 4th, in which time Saturn is in the place of the natal Moon; Mars, the lord of the Ascendant is in opposition to his natal place; and the Moon is among the stormy Pleiades.

As you can see, Agoli argues his version with two directions and with transits at the moment of Richelieu’s death.

The Morin’s version of the cardinal’s natal chart is another:

The nativity of cardinal Richelieu according to Morin

This chart is rectified as well. And as we can see, both astrologers find some Martian in the native’s person. Argoli gives the Ascendant in Scorpio, and Morin puts Mars on the Ascendant.

  1. Did Morin provide explanation of his rectification?

In fact, taking into account Richelieu’s love for poetry, Libra rising would be a plausible option, imho.

  2. In that place he discusses only two solar returns (for 57th and 58th years of the cardinal’s life).
I decided the birth time is rectified because of the time itself. Hardly it was written as 21h 34m, not 21h 30m, nor even 21h 35m.
