A New Tool

There is a small update in the Tools. I’ve added a new tool. This new tool can find a point of the ecliptic from its right ascension, oblique ascension, and oblique descension.

I thank rabbi Avraham Ibn Ezra for the inspiration :) Checking his method of cusps calculations, I felt a necessity of this tool.
Though, it is a usual thing in old-fashioned calculations in various house systems, actually. Regiomontanus has the same searching for the ecliptical point from its oblique ascension.

I think every astrologer knows that there is a Placidean house system. Some of astrologers are informed that Placidus is not the inventor of this house system. Few astrologers heard that Avraham Ibn Ezra wrote about this system five centuries before Placidus. But much less number of astrologers know what and where Ibn Ezra really wrote.

Ibn Ezra really described the house system that is based on the hour distance of the point of ecliptic from the meridian. And it is really the same basic idea as in Placidean house system.

Ibn Ezra describes this system in his ספר הטעמים א (The Book of Reasons A). A is important in this case, because there are two versions of The Book of Reasons – version A and version B. Version A is more than twice bigger than version B. But the English translation of The Book of Reasons by Meira Epstein is based on the version B. Therefore English speaking readers are bereft of some very interesting and important parts of this Ibn Ezra’s work, including the part on house system.

I considered the Hellenistic method of primary directions in two previous posts Primary Directions: the story of calculations (vol.1 and vol.2). Most Hellenistic astrologers directed this way. But there is a very important exception. This exception is Ptolemy.

Ptolemy was an eminent scholar of his time, the level of his knowledges and abilities was much higher than the level of a common astrologer of that time. Ptolemaic method of directions is much more advanced with respect to mathematics and astronomy, than the Hellenistic method I considered before, but his method wasn’t spread among Hellenistic astrologers.

Let’s consider the Ptolemaic method of primary directions as it is described in Tetrabiblos III,10.

Tools Upgrade

There is a considerable upgrade in Tools.

Hour Distance Calculator is updated. The new version can produce not only a hour distance, but temporal hours and semi-arcs as well.

Old and good Oblique And Right Ascensions Table Generator is online again, and it is updated as well. Now it produces not only right and oblique ascensions, but oblique descensions as well.

Two new tools are added:
The Converter Of Coordinates can convert equatorial coordinates into ecliptical and vice versa.
Ascensions And Descensions Calculator can calculate right ascension, oblique ascension, and oblique descension of a point of the celestial sphere from its ecliptical coordinates, and oblique ascension and descension of a point from its equatorial coordinates.

I hope you will find these new tools useful, and they help you in your hard astrological life ;)

Many people many times asked me, if my Generator of tables of Right and Oblique Ascensions and other tools for astrological calculations will be available again. We are reconstructing the WorldAstrology website, and these tools are currently unavailable there. I answered, that they will be available again sooner or later.

They come back

And the time has come, and my astrological tools come back to you :)

Cold days have come. Though the winter this year in my region looks rather like autumn, it is cold enough to say about influence of an external cold on humors of a human body.

Cold days have come

First of all, cold influence affects digestion which is the base of humor’s generation. The external cold cools heat of a body and weakens digestive ability. It means that badly digested food generates surplus of phlegm and a lack of the other humors. To correct it, we should support digestive function of a stomach. There are many various herbal recipes for this purpose, but I here will dwell only on one herb – the sage.

The translation of a fragment from the book by the astrologer of VIII c. Omar of Tiberias (‘Umar Ibn al-Farrukhân al-Tabarî) on horaries. This fragment says about accomplishment of some doubtful thing. The way of judgement doesn’t look standard for modern horary astrology.

Recently I reread the quatrains of Omar Khayyam. Unfortunately, in the English-speaking countries Ghiyās od-Dīn Abol-Fath Omār ibn Ebrāhīm Khayyām Neyshābūri mostly known through Edward Fitzgerald’s re-created translation of his quatrains (rubaiyat), which is quite far from the true spirit of the rubaiyat and based perhaps only on tenth part of the extant quatrains. In fact, the poetic heritage of this mathematician, philosopher, astrologer and poet of XI-XII cc. contains many true gems for a devotee of the spiritual evolution as well as for an astrologer.

The Lord has judged so, and there is no judgement over Him.
His decision no never turns into yes.
Perhaps, some possible thing is not existing, by chance.
But impossible one will never exist at all.
